Google Cloud has announced the coming addition of Toronto as its second Canadian region. Google Cloud currently has a single region in Montreal, so the second region represents a major expansion of the company, in the most populous province and city of the country.

Toronto is the newest of Google Cloud regions announced for 2021. Other regions soon to be available globally are Doha in Qatar, Dehli in India and Melbourne in Australia.

If this was still needed, this is a strong reminder to industry leaders Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure of the strong commitment of Google towards being a massive force in the public cloud industry.

Now that all leading IaaS providers have a presence in Quebec and Ontario, isn’t it time to see more investment in Western provinces, Alberta and British Columbia in particular? Having a Vancouver region makes sense to me although this does not seem to be a priority for the top vendors, probably due to the proximity of Seattle where all have existing infrastructure.

You can read the announcement about the new Toronto region on the Google Official Canada Blog.
